Remembering Dr. José L. Balbona: A Life of Dedication and Inspiration

In the soft embrace of an autumn afternoon, a community came together to pay tribute to the extraordinary life of Dr. José L. Balbona, affectionately known as "Peque." Dr. Balbona, a distinguished Belén alumnus and an exemplary professional in the field of psychiatry, touched the lives of many with his kindness, wisdom, and unwavering dedication to his spiritual journey.

On a quiet morning in July, the world bade farewell to this remarkable soul as he marked his 92nd birthday. Dr. Balbona passed to Congregante on December 8, 1950, leaving behind a legacy that would inspire generations to come. Despite health issues that hindered his physical presence in recent years, his spirit remained as vibrant as ever.

Dr. Balbona's commitment to his spiritual growth was evident in his annual attendance at the Spiritual Exercises in Atlanta. He was not only a devoted participant but also played a pivotal role in establishing the Atlanta Chapter in 1978. His dedication extended beyond his own journey; he served as the Instructor of aspirants, guiding others on their paths to enlightenment.

In honor of Dr. Balbona's rich life and enduring contributions, a second memorial service was held at Ignatius House in Atlanta on October 13, 2023, at 1 PM. Friends, family, and a community that cherished him gathered to celebrate his legacy. Following the service, they shared stories and memories of the man who had touched their hearts.

As we came together to remember and pray for the repose of Dr. Balbona's soul, we also asked Our Lady to extend her comforting embrace to his family, who continue to mourn his physical absence. Dr. Balbona's memory lives on in the lives he touched, the lessons he imparted, and the love he shared with all who were fortunate enough to know him.

In this heartfelt gathering, we found solace and inspiration in the life of a man who, despite facing health challenges, remained an unwavering beacon of spirituality and humanity. Dr. José L. Balbona's legacy lives on, a testament to the power of dedication, faith, and love.
