A Shared Legacy of Founding and Faith in the ACU

Today marks two important events for the Agrupacion Catolica Universitaria. It is the 74th year since the passing of Fr. Felipe Rey de Castro, S.J., the founder of the ACU. And it is also the birthday of our current Director, Fr. Jorge Luis Rojas, S.J. And it is fitting that these two events would coincide on this day. Fr. Rojas, while serving as pastor of La Iglesia de Reina, the birthplace of the ACU, assisted the ACU in locating the remains of Fr. Rey de Castro in February 2023. Furthermore, Fr. Rojas orchestrated the transfer of the remains of Fr. Rey de Castro from La Necrópolis de Cristóbal Colón to La Iglesia and the remains were permanently interred in January 2024 in a prominent location at the base of the sanctuary. This brings Fr. Rey de Castro's life to light for all those that visit the Church. Additionally, Fr. Rojas dedicated the theatre of the Church in the name of Fr. Rey de Castro and had a display built addressing the life of Fr. Rey de Castro and the history of the ACU. Thus, visitors can learn about Fr. Rey de Castro and the Marian Congregation he founded, the ACU.
Fr. Felipe Rey de Castro was born November 8, 1889, in Brión, Spain. His mother had nine brothers and sisters, one of which became Abbess of a nearby Benedictine Monastery and who described him as “always so loving, docile and given to piety from childhood, loved by all who knew him.” Felipe was schooled at Jesuit institutions, joining and leading a Marian Sodality at a young age, being a“model of virtue and effort, and of duty performed.” He entered the novitiate at Carrion de las Condes on September 7, 1908. He professed first vows in 1910 and was ordained priest on August 24, 1923. In 1925, at the age of 36 he was sent to serve at the “Escuela de Belén”, the Jesuit preparatory school in Havana, where he eventually founded the ACU.

Hoy se conmemoran dos acontecimientos importantes para la Agrupación Católica Universitaria. Se cumplen 74 años del fallecimiento del P. Felipe Rey de Castro, S.J., fundador de la ACU. Y también es el cumpleaños de nuestro actual director, el P. Jorge Luis Rojas, S.J. Y es apropiado que estos dos acontecimientos coinciden en este día. El P. Rojas, mientras se desempeñaba como párroco de La Iglesia de Reina, cuna de la ACU, colaboró con la ACU en la localización de los restos del P. Rey de Castro, S.J., en febrero de 2023. Además, el P. Rojas organizó el traslado de los restos del P. Rey de Castro desde La Necrópolis de Cristóbal Colón a La Iglesia, donde fueron enterrados permanentemente en enero de 2024 en un lugar destacado al pie del santuario. Esto da a conocer la vida del P. Rey de Castro a todos los que visitan la Iglesia. Además, el P. Rojas dedicó el teatro de la Iglesia en honor del P. Rey de Castro y mandó construir una exposición sobre la vida del P. Rey de Castro y la historia de la ACU. Así, los visitantes pueden aprender sobre el P. Rey de Castro y la Congregación Mariana que fundó, la ACU.
El P. Felipe Rey de Castro nació el 8 de noviembre de 1889 en Brión, España. Su madre tenía nueve hermanos y hermanas, una de las cuales llegó a ser abadesa de un monasterio benedictino cercano, quien lo describió como «siempre tan cariñoso, dócil y piadoso desde la infancia, querido por todos los que lo conocieron». Felipe se formó en instituciones jesuitas, incorporándose y dirigiendo una Congregación Mariana desde muy joven, siendo un «modelo de virtud, esfuerzo y deber cumplido». Ingresó al noviciado en Carrión de las Condes el 7 de septiembre de 1908. Emitió sus primeros votos en 1910 y fue ordenado sacerdote el 24 de agosto de 1923. En 1925, a los 36 años, fue enviado a servir en la Escuela de Belén, el colegio preparatorio jesuita de La Habana, donde finalmente fundó la ACU.
