Esta semana recibimos con gran tristeza la noticia del fallecimiento del Congregante Frank D. Salas.

Frank tenía 98 años y vivió una vida verdaderamente ilustre. El paso a congregante el 8 de diciembre de 1946, y este año habría sido su 80º aniversario como miembro de la ACU.

Fue un destacado ingeniero estructural, un esposo y padre ejemplar, y un hombre consagrado a la Santísima Virgen María y al servicio de la Iglesia. Conoció la ACU durante unos Ejercicios Espirituales dirigidos por el P. Felipe Rey de Castro, S.J. La experiencia que vivió en esos Ejercicios fue tan profunda que lo condujo rápidamente a su conversión al catolicismo.

Le precedieron en la Casa del Padre su querida esposa, Lucía Sabi, quien falleció en 2018 después de 67 años de matrimonio, y su hijo, el congregante de la ACU Raúl Salas. Durante ambos momentos difíciles, Frank demostró su profunda fe, expresando gratitud y entrega a la voluntad y la providencia del Señor.

Le sobreviven sus hijos Frank y Joan Salas, Albert Salas, Jimmy y Waedao Salas, Joe Salas, Lucy Salas y Carlos Moas, y Mary Salas, además de 17 nietos y 9 bisnietos.

En La Habana, Frank, junto con los agrupados Quitico Arango y Mario Suárez, fundó una empresa de ingeniería que llevó a cabo importantes proyectos, entre ellos La Habana del Este y el Puente sobre el río Zaza (Santa Clara, 1959). Esta obra recibió un reconocimiento especial por ser la primera de su tipo y continúa en funcionamiento después de siete décadas.

Posteriormente, Frank llegó a ser Ingeniero Jefe de la George A. Fuller Company, la mayor empresa privada de construcción de los Estados Unidos y constructora de la Torre de la Libertad de Miami (Freedom Tower). Aunque se le ofreció el cargo más importante de la empresa en Europa, lo rechazó para permanecer cerca de su familia.

También sirvió durante muchos años como miembro de la Junta Directiva de la Catholic League, organización fundada por los jesuitas, a petición del P. Llorente. Con el tiempo, se convirtió en el primer miembro en retirarse con el título de Director Emérito de la Catholic League.

Frank nunca dejó de aprender. Se mantuvo constantemente al día con los avances de la ingeniería, con el propósito de desarrollar viviendas seguras, sólidas y de bajo costo para las personas más necesitadas.

A los 93 años, impartió dos seminarios web con el Departamento de Ingeniería de la Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara, México (ITESO – Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente), como parte del ciclo "Viernes de Ingeniería".

Frank permaneció activo en la ACU hasta sus últimos momentos. Fue una presencia constante en la Guardia Sabatina hasta que su condición física ya no le permitió asistir. Incluso entonces, encontró otras maneras de servir y nunca perdió el contacto con la Congregación. Con frecuencia, una llamada telefónica de Frank era suficiente para animar a otros agrupados a participar en la Guardia Sabatina.

This week, we received with great sadness the news of the death of Congregant Frank D. Salas.

Frank was 98 years old and lived an illustrious life. He became a Congregant on December 8, 1946, and this year would have been his 80th anniversary as a member of the ACU. He was an accomplished structural engineer, devoted husband and father, and an example of a man consecrated to the Virgin Mary and service to the Church.

He first encountered the ACU during a set of Spiritual Exercises directed by Fr. Felipe Rey de Castro, S.J. Frank’s experience at these Exercises were so powerful that it quickly led to his conversion to Catholicism. He was predeceased by his loving wife Lucia Sabi, who passed away in 2018 after 67 years of marriage and by his son ACU congregant Raul Salas. During both of those difficult moments, Frank relied on his strong faith to reflect gratitude for and surrender to the Lord’s will and providence. He is survived by Frank and Joan Salas, Albert Salas, Jimmy and Waedao Salas, Joe Salas, Lucy Salas and Carlos Moas, Mary Salas, 17 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Frank and fellow agrupados Quitico Arango and Mario Suarez formed an engineering company in Havana, completing several projects including Habana del Este and the Zaza River Bridge (Santa Clara, 1959) which received a special award for being the first of its kind and is still operational after 7 decades. Frank became Chief Engineer for George A. Fuller Company, the largest private construction company in the U.S. and the builders of the Miami Freedom Tower (1925); Frank refused their top job in Europe to stay close to his family. He also served as a member of the Board of the Jesuit founded Catholic League, at the request of Fr. Llorente. Frank served there for years and became the first to retire as Board member Emeritus of Catholic League. He never stopped learning; he consistently educated himself on developments in engineering with a goal of developing safe and solid low-cost homes for the poor.

At the age of 93, Frank hosted two webinars with the engineering department of the Universidad Jesuita de Guadalajara, Mexico, known as ITESO (Instituto Tecnológico y de Estudios Superiores de Occidente) as part of a series entitled Viernes de Ingeneria (Engineering Fridays). Frank remained active in the ACU until his final moments. He was a consistent presence at the Guardia Sabatina until he was no longer physically able to attend. Even then, he found other ways to contribute and did not lose touch. It was often a phone call from Frank that inspired other Agrupados to attend the Guardia Sabatina. There will not be a viewing.
